A Tailored 3-day 4-Student Workshop with Shem
Step inside the studio and experience Abstraction by Design (AbD) in an intimate, hands-on workshop limited to just four artists. With plenty of one-on-one guidance, you’ll explore materials, color, texture, composition, and design while developing a cohesive body of work. Working between table and wall, you’ll build layered surfaces, step back to assess, and make confident creative decisions along the way.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPLORE
●Material selection, composition, design, and balance.
●Color mixing and tinting. Layering, texture, collage, and paint.
●Sanding, scraping, peeling, excavation, glueing, sealing, and clear coating.
ABSTRACTION BY DESIGN
AbD is a mixed-media method built around the layered relationship between paper and paint. Through wet and dry techniques, building and excavation, the process encourages experimentation, discovery, and the unexpected.
A.R.R.
At the heart of AbD is A R R: Action. Review. React. This simple rhythm creates an ongoing conversation between artist and artwork: make an action, assess, and respond. You’ll learn to make more informed decisions and develop work that is layered, intentional, and visually resolved.
WORKING IN THE STUDIO
The studio experience is active and hands-on. You’ll work on multiple panels and explore formats including diptychs, triptychs, linear suites, grids, or individual compositions, whatever best supports your visual direction.
Most materials and tools are provided in this WS. Students bring panels, personal collage materials, and acrylic paint. A detailed materials list will be provided.
